Observations of unusually long wave crests in noctilucent clouds: the upper tropospheric jet stream as a source of atmospheric gravity waves
For the first time, very long crests (of 450-500 km length) of atmospheric gravity waves observed in noctilucent clouds have been studied in detail. In spite of such long wave crests, gravity waves had a short wavelength of about 20 km. A model analysis demonstrated that a source of such peculiar gravity waves was located significantly below, at the tropopause, and was associated with the jet stream at about 8-10 km. A role of the upper tropospheric jet stream as a source of gravity waves propagating upwards to the summer mesopause is discussed.
