Postdoctoral position in optical aurora research (dnr: 2.2.1-1/25)
We are seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position focused on experimental and modelling studies of the auroral ionosphere. The successful candidate will analyze observations of striking luminous clouds and ionized plasma, utilizing advanced research facilities such as a multi-station auroral imaging system and the international EISCAT research radars.
Job description
The Solar Terrestrial Atmospheric Research (STAR) programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics invites applications for a postdoctoral position in auroral physics. The selected candidate will primarily analyze the data from the BROR sounding rocket experiment. The Barium Release Optical and Radio (BROR) rocket experiment was successfully carried out on 23 March 2023, at the Esrange Space Center, outside Kiruna, Sweden. The overarching objective of the BROR experiment is to conduct a comprehensive study of small-scale processes and structures in the auroral ionosphere. This is achieved by actively modifying the ionosphere through the release of barium, in conjunction with ground-based optical and radio observations of the resulting plasma clouds.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to all stages of the research process. This includes the processing of raw optical and radar data, the development of auroral ionosphere models, and the interpretation of these data.
Qualifications
It is essential that candidates have obtained a PhD in a field related to space physics. Previous experience with auroral optical and radar data is highly valued. Strong programming skills are essential, and proficiency in languages like Python, Julia, or MATLAB is highly desirable.
